The Commonwealth of The Bahamas is an English-speaking nation made up of 700 islands that form a 100,000 square mile archipelago that extends over 500 miles of the clearest water in the world.  The Bahamas gets its name from the Spanish, baja mar, meaning 'shallow sea'. Although the Bahamas (an independent country) is not geographically located in the Caribbean although it is a member of the Caribbean Community and the Commonwealth of Nations.

The Bahamas capital city is Nassau, which is located on the island of New Providence.

Bimini is the closest island to the United States and is known as the gateway to the Bahamas. Each island of the Bahamas has its own diversity that extends beyond geography, carrying through to the heart of The Bahamas, the Bahamian people.
